140 Voices was updated daily by clients and residents of homeless charity, The Wallich, from 1st July 2011, and 'locked' to become our charity's Annual Review on the 31st August 2011. 100's of entries were narrowed down to 140 by a panel of staff and clients.
What you see here, now, is the result – 140 entries, 140 voices, 140 real life opinions about homelessness, by people who have actually experienced homelessness.

I used to look down on people myself, I used to be a manager and I made a major mistake and became homeless. Everybody makes mistakes.

i think that the society could do more to help homeless people under the age of 16, because social services didnt do anything to help me.

I Feel It Is Wrong To Judge People. Everyone Goes Through Difficulties In Life, Some Harder Than Others. Never Judge A Book By Its Cover
John Jones from Ninian Park Road, 30 August 2011 at 16:28
People dont understand homelessness because it can come from alcohol/drug problems, marraige breakdown or deteriaration of mental health.
Mark Hewings from Ninian Park, 30 August 2011 at 15:45
Society do not have the right information. They see a homeless person and they think its there fault whan in reality its circumstances
JULIE BUTLER from BRIDGEND, 30 August 2011 at 00:35
I think people judge worst, what they fear most happening to themselves.
Steve Robson from Court Road, 26 August 2011 at 13:52
Social problems are the roots of lack of education, lack of a solid foundation and lack of good parenting.
John from Hamilton, 26 August 2011 at 13:44
People dont understand homelessness because they have never been homeless.
David McBride from Gorwelion, 25 August 2011 at 14:53

Everyone's labelled and people are judegemental, people need to stop looking in black and white.
Marie-Anne from Newtown, 07 August 2011 at 16:23
A lot of people don't understand homelessness and how isolated homeless people feel. Move on can be difficult as you feel alone.

everyone has problems in their life but lately it feels like because there are heroin users around the hostel the public assume we''re users

I am an elderly man with three chronic conditions and still the council will not find me long-term accommodation and taken too long.
Keith from Wrexham, 01 July 2011 at 13:58
Society is quick to judge. I am homeless through no fault of my own. Society just assumes why I am. it doesn't ask why I am homeless.
Homelessness is often very misunderstood. We all know the stereotypes of homeless people; presented as frightening or threatening or something 'other' than the safe everyday world. Of course homelessness can affect anyone in society.
A combination of issues can place someone in a marginalised, vulnerable and excluded position. We help people from all walks of life. We hear varied stories as to how people have found themselves to be homeless. The Wallich's reason for existence is simple - to help and support these people to move on with their lives and participate fully in society.
