140 Voices

140 Voices was updated daily by clients and residents of homeless charity, The Wallich, from 1st July 2011, and 'locked' to become our charity's Annual Review on the 31st August 2011. 100's of entries were narrowed down to 140 by a panel of staff and clients.
What you see here, now, is the result – 140 entries, 140 voices, 140 real life opinions about homelessness, by people who have actually experienced homelessness.

Ibelieve the benefit system only works, when you have a voice to back up your own.

The benefits system should not just be about money it should be about educating people on how to budget and use their money appropriately.

I am careful with my money but wonder if I will be able to cope if I have to go onto JSA. I worry a lot & this keeps me awake some nights.

If I won the lottery I would keep enough for me and my family and would help people in similar situations to mine.

My Wallich Support Worker has helped me to budget and pay my bills on time. I now know this is important and it means I don't have to worry.

Sorting out my benefits & being deaf would've been impossible without support from my Wallich support worker. The DWP don't know what 2 do.

We struggle to live on our income. Thankfully we were given a food box when we were skint and had nothing to eat.

If I won the lottery, i would put the money towards my Uni fees to help me gain a degree and help me start a career in Games Design.

JSA= £68; less than £10 per day. Surviving on the street is difficult. The Wallich help me to survive they know the difficulties I face.

The charts below give an overview of the income and expenditure for the Wallich for the year ended 31st March 2011.

Value

Where The Wallich's money comes from:
Income

purple Welsh Assembly Government Grants 69.0%
orange Rent and Service Charges 27.5%
light blue Grants and Donations 2.3%
red Other 1.2%

How we invest the money in our services:
Expenditure

purple Direct Service Provision 90.2%
pink Management, Administration and Governance 9.0%
orange Costs of Generating Funds Income 0.5%
blue Fundraising Costs 0.3%

Once again, our services expanded during the year and this resulted in over 4,000 individuals making use of the services that we provide. New projects opened include The GIFT Floating Support Project in Denbighshire, a specialist Substance Misuse Project in Blaenau Gwent, the Ty Bont Support Project in Newtown and an expansion of the Clos Sant Paul Project in Carmarthenshire.

This resulted in an income of £8.77m which was an increase of 4.4% over the previous year.

Staff are our main resource and during the year, an organisation wide pay review was carried out by external consultants. We were able to implement the recommendations and the additional cost of this together with the cost of new staff for the projects above resulted in an increase of 11% to our wages cost.

As a result of the above, our costs increased in total by 10.6% to just under £8.5m which left a surplus for the year of £276k (2010 = £723k).

There continues to be uncertainty regarding our future funding. Along with other support providers, we are continually looking at our cost base and introducing new ways of staffing our existing and future projects. In all these efforts, our primary motivation is to continue to offer the best service and accommodation possible to those who have need of them.
